Why do teeth get “shaved down” for veneers

First understanding the difference between veneers and crowns can help to understand how teeth are prepared for each. Veneers can be made with ceramics in a lab and then adhered to the teeth. Laminate veneers are super thin shells which cover just the front of the teeth and can wrap around the chewing surface. Veneers can also be made from composite resin and added to the teeth to reshape the teeth and change the color.

The less change that is needed, the thinner the veneers can be whether they are porcelain or composite. If the teeth are super dark and or very crooked, then the teeth will need to be shaved down to provide enough room for the thick porcelain or composite to mask the dark color.  So one way to be more conservative with the preparation of the tooth for veneers is to start with a lighter color.

Crowns on the other hand cover the entire surface of the tooth. Crowns are often used on teeth that have had root canal treatment, large fillings or need to change the shape or position. To make sure the material is strong enough, the tooth must be shaved down. How much it’s shaved down depends on the material of the crown. Metal crowns require the least shaving where as zirconium crowns require the most. Having straight or favorably positioned teeth can prevent the use of crowns be each dentist’s style is different. Some dentists like crowns because they have more control over the treatment and don’t have to worry about relapse if the patient doesn’t wear their retainers.  Teeth which have deteriorated severely will most likely need crowns regardless of color, shape or position. Each case is unique and needs a consultation to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.

At Bleach Bar, we try to be as conservative as possible when restoring your smile.  When you schedule a smile design consultation, think about what your end goal is.  What do you like, what do you not like?  Do you like a natural look or a more Hollywood Smile?  Do you want fuller lips?  Show more teeth?  Do you have you have missing teeth?  Do you like the color of your gums?
